Exchange High Availability Solution

Consultant involved in the design and implementation of a High Available Exchange 2003 solution for a Canadian electronics supply company. This solution involved the implementation of four exchange servers with a network load balanced pair and a MS cluster with 2 nodes connected to an HP EVA storage solution. This project involved design, implementation, migration of mail from old exchange servers and knowledge transfer to ensure client was comfortable with new solution. This project spanned two months. This solution now provides this client an email platform that will ensure that rapid growth will be handled with very little interruption to email services. Some of the challenges involved were dealing with the owners of the corporate Active Directory Forest/Exchange Organization who were located in a different timezone 6 hours ahead.

Active Directory/Exchange 2007 Migration Project

Lead Consultant involved in an Active Directory/Exchange 2007 migration project for a regional area Hospital research department.  This project involved a complex migration of Active Directory into a shared forest organization with a mail migration from Lotus Notes and Sun Onemail to Exchange Server 2007.  This project involved all project phases including discovery, design, proof of concept and implementation.  This project spanned five months and involved a team of three consultants.

Disaster Recovery Exercise

Consultant conducted a disaster recovery exercise for a leading investment counseling firm.  This work involved recovering four separate systems which included Active Directory, Exchange 2003, File/Print Services, and SQL 2000.  Symantec Backup Exec 11d was the backup solution used and VMware ESX was the platform used for the test environment.  This exercise involved the documentation of the whole recovery process which will give the client the confidence that they can rapidly recover from any of these systems failing.  This project spanned one month and involved two consultants.

Complex Projects involving Storage and Virtualization

Consultant/Architect involved in several complex projects for Geosign Corporation.

  • Implementation of two new storage systems from IBM and Qlogic which included the assessment, design, proper implementation and migration following industry best practices
  • Also involved the re-configuration of the older storage systems to improve performance to existing systems
  • Involved the work of development DBAs, a Storage Architect and many other stakeholders to ensure the smooth transition to the new storage infrastructure
  • Expansion of the Virtualization Infrastructure based on VMware ESX to a farm with 9 hosts
  • Active Directory re-design recommendations and implementation
  • Project Server 2003 install
  • IT Team mentoring and leadership

During these projects support, documentation and knowledge transfer of the newly evolving infrastructure was also another key role that was undertaken.  These projects contributed to the ability of Geosign to be able to provide for the rapidly changing requirements of its various business units.  These projects spanned seven months and involved a great team.

Supporting Active Directory and Exchange 2003 migration efforts

Consultant assigned to a national mining organization for the purposes of supporting Active Directory and Exchange 2003 migration efforts.  The responsibilities of this assignment include the recommendations in the following areas:
  • Active Directory performance improvements
  • Active Directory security improvements
  • Active Directory disaster recovery documentation
  • Exchange performance improvements
  • Exchange security improvements
  • Exchange disaster recovery documentation
The recommendations to this client were based on Microsoft best practices and field experience from Compugen.  The responsibilities of this role increased as this client undertook new migration initiatives of existing business units and new mergers. This role initially was intended to be an assignment for three days per week for a six month contract now has been extended until the end of 2006(1½ year engagement).

Active Directory Infrastructure Re-design and Implementation

Consultant assigned to implement a redesigned Active Directory infrastructure for a Regional Municipality.  This redesign focused on the business requirements of the various departments and fundamentally involved an OU restructure with the proper security isolation and delegation of administration.  This project spanned six months and involved two senior consultants and one technical resource.

Comprehensive Information Management Technology Assessment

IT Architect conducted a comprehensive Information Management Technology assessment for a regional Health Research Institute that built on the Hospital’s assets and resources, within the framework of the Hospital (IM) department, and meet the needs of both the Institute and its researchers.  This technology assessment included a comparative analysis between different technology options or projects and presented a roadmap for the future, potentially highlighting new technology opportunities that can serve as a starting point for the development of a strategic technology plan for Lawson.  This project spanned six months and involved one senior architect.

Storage/Virtualization Assessment

Consultant involved in a Storage/Virtualization Assessment for a leading roofing and waterproofing supplies producer which presented a vendor-neutral assessment of the organizations strategy & directions regarding data storage, back-up, and high availability requirements. This assessment included recommendations surrounding the organizations virtualization direction. Consideration was made for completed research into SAN technologies available in the marketplace.  This assessment spanned two weeks and involved two senior consultants.

Active Directory and Exchange Server 2003 design, planning and implementation

IT Architect for Active Directory and Exchange Server 2003 design, planning and implementation for regional energy corporation.  This project was a full time engagement to conduct the discovery, planning, deployment of the entire IT infrastructure to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.  This involved the migration of 800 users, 600 computers and 80 Servers to a new Active Directory Forest and a mailbox migration of over 500 mailboxes with over 140GB of mail data.  This project involved onsite support staff and one architect spanning 5 months.

Microsoft Quickstart Planning for Windows 2003

Delivery Consultant for a Microsoft initiated planning project for a provincial lottery orgainzation.  Delivered a Microsoft Quickstart Planning for Windows 2003 which involved all aspects of a high level Active Directory design.  This involved design and planning sessions with a cross section of IT personnel with Microsoft involved from a quality assurance aspect.  This project was comprised of two consultants and spanned 6 weeks.
